Trip Overview
Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge is located on the banks of the Marañon River about 75 miles south west of Iquitos. It is the only lodge inside of the buffer zone of the Pacaya Samiria Amazon Reserve, which makes it exclusive to the region. This is a top-notch genuine Amazon Jungle experience. However, travelers must be prepared to be out of touch with the ‘real world’ for the duration of the visit.

Surrounded by abundant rainforest, Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge has been built in accordance with local architecture, using all local materials in its construction. There are only 8 comfy bungalows, assuring an elite and secluded stay. Every bungalow has a private terrace overlooking the Marañón River, private bath / running water. All bungalows are mosquito proofed with mesh sealed windows and direct access to the main garden.

Amenities include a large club-house, dining room, hammock room, bar, watch-towers and hiking paths; hammock room and viewpoints that offer stunning panoramic views of the Marañón River and the surrounding forest.

Activities include visits to the local communities, hikes in primary rainforest, flora and fauna observation, bird watching, canoe rides, piranha fishing and day / night excursions. In the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve visitors will also have the chance to observe the exotic pink dolphin of the Amazon at their natural habitat. On top of all of this, the bird-watching programs have been designed for you to experience the beauty and diversity of the Amazon in its natural habitat.

For those who want to stay in touch with ‘the outside’, sorry but there’s no Internet here. Electricity is available, though, between 6:00pm-10:00pm. Most current electronics (e.g. laptops, cameras) can be safely charged using 220V current which is what we offer, but please check your owners manual first!

*As on all Adventures to Peru tours, you’re taken care of from beginning to end: airport transfers are included!

Day 1 Pacaya Samiria Amazon Jungle Lodge (L,D)
Arrival and reception at the Iquitos airport followed by a transfer in air-conditioned mini-van to nearby village of Nauta (1.5 hrs) where our speedboat will be waiting to start our adventure up river. But first, a quick visit to the confluence of the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers, where the River takes the name Amazon, will open your eyes to the vastness of the River.

From the confluence we’ll then continue our trip up the Marañon River to the lodge for lunch and accommodation. This afternoon, we will go on an orientation hike through the primary forest that surrounds the lodge to appreciate abundant flora and fauna.

Pending evening weather conditions, we’ll embark on a nocturnal canoe excursion in search animals and insects. Relax to the sound of the forest before dinner and drinks.

Day 2 Pacaya Samiria Amazon Jungle Lodge (B,L,D)
At dawn, we’ll take a guided orientation hike through the forest around the lodge, searching for birds, and jungle creatures followed by breakfast back at the lodge.

Following breakfast, we’ll travel to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Once in the Reserve, we’ll travel down the Yanayacu River in search of the pink Amazon River dolphin and other aquatic flora and fauna.

At noon we will stop to have our box lunch.

Following lunch, we’ll visit Japon and Plantano lakes (cochas), full of enormous variety of palms, large trees and a beautiful landscape. Here, we’ll have some optional activities, such as canoes on the lake, piranha fishing, identification of plants, bird watching or maybe a cool swim with the piranhas in one of the lakes. A late afternoon arrival at the lodge gets you back in time for a cold shower and a hammock before dinner.

Day 3 Pacaya Samiria National Reserve / Camping (B,L,D)
Breakfast then departure for an overnight camping excursion to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. While on the Yanayacu River, some of the most pristine terrain in all of Peru, our native guides will be on the lookout for the elusive pink and grey river dolphins. We’ll visit two small lagoons, Japan and Plantano, both rich in fauna and full of Amazon Palms. While exploring by dugout canoe, feel free to go for a refreshing dip before our box lunch.

Later that afternoon we’ll arrive to our campsite. Free time to rest and reflect on your day before dinner. Then, set out for an evening canoeing excursion in search of the South American black and white Cayman, nocturnal birds and bizarre insects. Spend the night surrounded by nature in sealed tents.

Day 4 Pacaya Samiria Amazon Jungle Lodge (B,L,D)
This morning after breakfast we’ll have more chances to seek out birds, flora and invertebrates. Here within the Reserve, one will not find cities or large populations other than the native settlements established here before the Peruvian Government established the Reserve. People are genuine and the jungle is real.

Lunch will be onboard the skiff or at the campsite, depending on optional activities coordinated by the guide. Afterwards, enjoy an impromptu visit to a local village to learn about daily activities like hunting, fishing, agriculture and conservation efforts. Visit the crafts market and optionally support the indigenous villagers. One can contribute to community development buying typical hand made souvenirs, made of seeds and/or a vegetable ivory called ‘Tagua’.

This is a genuine unarranged experience, and one that you’ll never forget!

In the afternoon, we’ll leave the Reserve traveling down river to the lodge for the night.

Day 5 Pacaya Samiria Amazon Jungle Lodge / Iquitos / Lima (B,L)
After breakfast you’ll have the morning free. Write in your journal, relax or meditate to the sounds of the jungle before lunch. Immediately after lunch, take the boat back to Nauta and travel by air-conditioned minivan back to the Iquitos Airport or hotel.

* Lunch (if flight departure permits)
