You’ll have some free time around Cusco before being collected from the hotel by your local guide for magical excursion to some of Cusco’s highlights. Set off from the city center towards the X-zone and the magnificent Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, which majestically overlooks the city of Cusco. Sacsayhuaman can be translated as ‘speckled falcon’ or ‘speckled head’. The last interpretation refers to the belief that the city of Cusco was set out in the form of a puma whose head was the hill of Sacsayhuaman. The origins are uncertain but the fortress is generally credited to the period of Inca Pachacutec (1450-1490), the Inca king who essentially founded the Inca Empire.
After Sacsayhuaman, your van will be waiting to continue with visits to Q’enko, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay also located near the X-zone, just outside the city before returning to Cusco for a stop by the ‘Koricancha’ or Inca Temple of the Sun located beneath the Santo Domingo church and convent. You’ll then be returned to your hotel.Take the evening free to spend at your leisure. For dinner try ‘Chicha’ by Gaston Acurio, the most celebrated of Peruvian chefs! But you’ll have to make reservations early, as it fills up quickly! Nightlife in Cusco is vibrant, to say the least. Pubs, discos and restaurants fill nightly with partygoers and the plazas and parks are jam-packed with friendly locals.
Day 2 will be spent in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Once an important source of food for the Inca, the Sacred Valley is a lush agricultural region that continues to supply the city of Cusco with much of its produce. As it is 600m lower than Cusco, temperatures are on average 5 degrees Cº higher in the Sacred Valley.
Our travels will bring us through the major archaeological sites of Pisac and Ollantaytambo. On the way we’ll make an optional stop at Ahuanachancha, a small Llama farm where you can interact with the 4 species of Peruvian Camels, Llamas, Alpacas, Vicuñas and Huanachos. Continue to the Pisac archaeological site for a breath taking optional 1.5-hour or 3km hike that will allow you to fully appreciate the Incan city nestled high in the Andean range. Later the van will make a short stop at the colorful artesian market at Pisac, known for the indigenous community’s continued use of the ‘treque’ or barter system to exchange their products.
You’ll keep moving through the Valley traveling north along the Sacred Urubamba River. After passing numerous indigenous villages, high snow peaks and gorgeous panoramos, enjoy a stop in Urubamba’s ‘Alhambra’ for huge buffet style Peruvian lunch, which included in your visit. After lunch the day trip continues as we arrive to the picturesque village of Ollantaytambo, the location of another large Inca site. This major Inca ruin is known as the best surviving example of Inca urban planning and engineering. But more than that, Ollantaytambo is a living breathing Inca City. Make sure you take a stroll through the ‘Old City’, full of Inca streets and constructions, located just off the main Plaza de Armas in Ollantaytamo.
Following Ollantaytambo you’ll transfer back to Urubamba to spend the evening and catch our breath for the train ride to Machu Picchu tomorrow.Day 3 is the most spectacular day of the tour; a full day journey to ancient Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu.
You’ll be collected early from your Urubamba or Ollantaytambo hotel and private transfer to the train station in Ollantaytambo. Depart on the Expedition train traveling northeast through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After passing numerous indigenous villages, high snow peaks and gorgeous panoramas you arrive to Aguas Calientes Village, also known as Machu Picchu Village. You’ll be collected from the train station by your local guide and walk about 10 minutes to the shuttle bus station. Here, board the 30-minute shuttle to the main entrance of the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu.
Enjoy Machu Picchu or ‘Old Mountain’ in all its’ glory on an expert 2.5-hour guided tour. Your guide will take you to the most important sectors of the Citadel including the IntiHuatana ‘Sun Dial’, Main Plaza and the religious sector, comprised of the Temples of the Water, Sun, Mother Earth and Three Windows. Your guide will attempt to rationalize sensible theories about Machu Picchu as to who, when, where and why as the sun rises over the Andes and illuminates the Citadel. Then, take some free time at Site to explore, rest, meditate or simply chill out. Make the hour-long hike up to the ‘Intipunku’ or Sun Gate. Climb Huayna Picchu (Young Peak 2 hrs not included), hike to the Moon Temple (2 1/2 hrs), or venture to the Inca Draw Bridge! There is no shortage of things so see and do in Machu Picchu. Catch the shuttle back down to Aguas Calientes at your leisure, have some lunch in the village before catching an ongoing late afternoon train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy followed by private transfer to Cusco.
On day 4 you’ll have some free time in the Inca Imperial Capital, before an afternoon direct flight to Lima for the final stop on your journey.
Grab your map and camera and set off to discover Cusco’s enchanting network of narrow colonial streets and white wash mud-brick walls built atop Incan stone foundations demonstrated a true amalgamation of cultures! Explore the many markets, churches, museums, plazas and first-rate restaurants, all at your fingertips while exploring the city center on foot.We recommend a stop by the Incan Archaeological Museum located just around minutes from your hotel. Then, time permitting, visit the recently opened ‘Casa Concha’, which houses hundreds of pieces removed from Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham in 1912 and recently returned in 2011 (Centennial Anniversary of Machu Picchu’s scientific discovery) to Peru by Yale University in the United States.
Also worth a visit is the colorful local market at San Pedro and the ‘must see’ bohemian neighborhood of San Blas, full of artists, craftsmen and street vendors, both only minutes from the hotel. This afternoon you’ll be collected from the Cusco hotel and private transfer back to the Cusco airport for direct a direct flight to Lima.
Adventures to Peru services end today at the Lima airport. We hope you had a spectacular trip!
